Lions annual pancake days!

April 20th - 5-8p.m. (pancake feed)
Flip out with SALSA in April at the Annual Lions Pancake Days. The
Lions will be flipping pancakes for thousands of people, and hoping to raise
thousands of dollars to help prevent blindness and provide glasses to people in
our area that have a low income. The Downtown Lions also help support the SALSA
program in a variety of ways such as: sponsoring Make A Difference Day;
sponsoring the Youth Vision Workshop and the SALSA Recognition Luncheon. Now
it’s time for SALSA to return the favor! Sign up at your SALSA meeting,

February Events
#1. Winter Carnival for Children's Care Hospital
Date: Monday, February 21st
Time: 1:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m.

Children’s Care Hospital and School - 2501 W. 26th Street,
SF, SD 57105
SALSA students will be organizing, setting up and participating in a
“Winter Carnival” for children at Children’s Care Hospital and
School. We will be setting up several carnival booths for the
children to participate in. The children at the hospital and school are
so excited for us to come and play with them on their day off of school (and
yours too).
#2. Game Day with Seniors
Date: Saturday, February 26th
Time: 1:30 p.m. - 3:30 p.m.
Location: Avera Prince of Peace Retirement Community - 4500 S. Prince of Peace Place, Sioux Falls, SD 57103
Our
time spent with the senior citizens at this facility last year was a SALSA
student favorite! Sign up to help make a special day for residents in the
senior apartments, assisted living and long term care programs at Avera Prince
of Peace. This event will bring together our community’s past, present,
and future by playing games and then sitting down to visit and share
refreshments. These older residents love interacting with youth like you,
and we will work to make it a special day for them by engaging the seniors in
games like volleyball, ring toss, and bean bags. There is room for 20 students
at this event.
January SALSA Wide Events
#1. Volunteers of America, Dakotas - Thrift Store
Date: Saturday, January 29th
Time: 3 shifts will be available 9-11 a.m., 11:30-1:30 p.m., or 2-4:00 p.m.
Location: 217 N. Nesmith, Sioux Falls, SD 57103
SALSA
volunteers are invited to serve in this fun working environment where
creativity is encouraged! Come see one agency who works everyday to
help meet the basic needs of members of our community. Volunteers will
help the store in a variety of ways including sorting the donated items,
possibly pricing, arranging displays, and miscellaneous tasks. Wear
comfortable clothing that is warm and you don't mind working in. Must
be a SALSA member to sign up!

December SALSA Wide Events
#1. Project Warm-Up
Date: Saturday, December 4th
"Project
Warm Up," is a day when hundreds of home-made fleece blankets are made
for students living in poverty. This project was started with one
student's compassion (a past SALSA member) for those less fortunate and
has exploded into a project that delivered 1200+ homemade blankets last
year.
#2. Gift Wrapping at the Empire Mall to Benefit Children's Inn
Date: Saturday, December 18th
Last
year this program of offering gift wrapping for holiday shoppers at the
Empire Mall raised over $24,000 to benefit the Children's Inn! It is
Children's Inn biggest fundraiser of the year, and helps them provide
free services to the victims of domestic violence. Come and join us for
this festive and fun event to benefit this special population!
November SALSA Wide Events - Muscular Dystrophy Association
#1: Muscular Dystrophy Association Stride and Ride
Date: Saturday, November 13
MDA is the world’s leading voluntary health organization fighting more
than 40 neuromuscular diseases. Thousands of people of all ages are
affected by muscle diseases, including 550 families right here in South
Dakota. Come help at this fun event that will have a vendor fair and
carnival along with a walk as a fundraiser to help the special families fight
back! Volunteers will help with food, registration or carnival games.
#2. Feeding South Dakota - Senior Box Lunches
Date: Saturday, November 20th
This
program works to improve the health of low-income people at least 60
years of age by supplementing their diets with nutritious USDA commodity
foods. People who use this program can receive a commodity once a
month for six to twelve months. The package includes a variety of food
including: cereals, canned meat, canned fruits, instant milk, peanut
butter, instant potatoes, and pasta products. Between 30-50 SALSA
volunteers will have the opportunity to help pack at least 1,600 meals
that day, so come and join us!
October SALSA Wide Events - Zoo Boo and Rake the Town
#1: Zoo Boo
Date: Friday, October 22rd
Time: 4:30 to 9:00pm
Location: Zoo Boo - Great Plains Zoo
For
the first time ever, SALSA will be helping with this safe, fun and
enjoyable premiere Halloween event for kids of all ages at the Great
Plains Zoo! We will make this spooky even possible by greeting guests,
keeping the pumpkins lit, handing out candy bags and more! There is a
limit of 30 spots for this event, so sign up early!
#2: Rake the Town
Date: Saturday, October 30
Time: 8:30 to 12:00pm
Location: Meet at the HELP!Line Center - 1000 N. West Avenue
SALSA
has committed to rake 20 yards of elderly or disabled people who
physically cannot rake their own yards, have no one else who can help
them, and can't afford to pay to have it done. We will meet at the
HELP!Line Center as a starting point, and divide into groups and go
around town, making a difference!
September SALSA Wide Event - "Late Night Trash Talking!"
Date: Saturday, September 11th
Time: After the President's Bowl Football Game (estimated start time of SALSA project 9:30pm or 10:00pm until the job is done.
Location: Howard Wood Stadium off to Russell Avenue
The
President's Bowl parking lot clean-up committee is looking for 10-20
students from each high school to pick up trash from the parking
lot/area around the stadium after the President's Bowl game is over (for
approximately 1 hour). Before we get our hands dirty, we will hear
from the City of Sioux Falls Sustainability Office whose mission is to
help create a more sustainable community now and in the future by
proposing and assisting with the implementation of measurable solutions
to environmental, social, and economic concerns. After our service
activity , you will then have the opportunity to give your "green idea"
to the City!
