Emergency Shelter Program at Pathways Shelter for the Homeless
Yankton Site
Founded on the belief that everyone deserves a home. Pathways offers four different shelter programs:
- Emergency Shelter for Families:
- 8 rooms designated for households with children. Families will receive 30 days for free in a 12-month period. After 30 days, rent will be charged for extended stay.
- Tier 2 Services:
- 2 rooms designated for men and women seeking a more permanent residence and access to more services. To qualify for this program, individuals must be employed or be able to pay rent at the start. Total of 4 beds for women and 4 beds for men.
- Community Transition Program:
- Partnership with South Dakota Department of Corrections;provides 8 beds for men who are needing to re-enter the community. These individuals must follow the same guidelines for admission as other clients.
Through the Emergency Solutions Grant, Pathways offers two programs:
- Homeless Prevention
- For individuals and families who are unable to pay their rent or utilities and will otherwise be displaced from their residence. Call staff to learn more about eligibility requirements.
- Rapid Re-housing
- For individuals who have found potential housing but may not yet have the funds to secure that housing. For those who are eligible, Pathways may be able to pay first month's rent, rental deposit and utility deposit. Call staff to learn more about eligibility requirements.
Funding through the Security Deposit Assistance Program allows Pathways to operate a program solely to assist with security deposits.
Contact Center Program at Yankton County
Yankton - Walnut Street
Helps residents of Yankton County with the following: food pantry, utility assistance, including past due and disconnect bills for water, lights, and heating, gasoline, partial rent, representative payee system, and emergency medication assistance.
Contact Center does not help with any kind of deposit (rent, utility, etc.)

Auxiliary Emergency Fund Program at American Legion
Mitchell Site
A national grant assistance program that provides financial assistance to eligible American Legion Auxiliary members who are impacted by a natural disaster or in a time of financial crisis.
Disaster Assistance: Applicants must either received damage to their primary residence, been displaced/evacuated from their residence or experienced basic out-of-pocket emergency expenses.
Hardship Assistance: Applicants have to have past due expenses related to their primary residence and/or basic household utilities.
Grants are awarded for $3,000 per grantee and one grant (disaster or hardship) will be awarded in a 12-month period.

If eligible, temporary emergency financial assistance is available for children's needs of up to $1,500. All other avenues must be exhausted before applying for assistance.
Low Income Energy Assistance Program Program at South Dakota Department of Social Services
Low Income Energy Assistance Program at Pierre - Governors Drive
The program assists with household heating costs for propane and fuel oil July 1 - April 30. For electric and gas, meter readings October 1 - May 15 are eligible for payment.
Energy funds are distributed on a first come first serve basis. Applications received after March 31 will be processed for the next heating season.
The program is designed to provide a supplemental payment to the primary heating cost of a home. Eligibility and assistance amount is based on household income, heating type and region, and number of persons in household.
In heating crisis situations, such as disconnect for primary heating source, refusal to deliver or cash on delivery, eviction (if heat is included in rent), or furnace problems, contact the office for emergency assistance.
