Black Hills Fireworks Information – 2024

Overview: Where permitted, South Dakota law permits the discharge of fireworks between June 27 and July 8, 2024.  Local ordinances regulate the use of fireworks and the potential fines or jail time for violations.  Citations may also be issued at any time when someone is reckless or negligent with fireworks.

In the Black Hills area, the public may call (605) 394-2151, option 9, for answers to fireworks-related questions.

Restrictions: In the Black Hills area
No discharge of any fireworks within the Black Hills Fire Protection District. For more information on fire prevention and a map of the Black Hills Fire Protection District visit the State of South Dakota Wildland Fire webpage.

The following areas restrict fireworks other than novelty fireworks such as party poppers, snappers, sparklers and toy caps:

  • Pennington County other than Rapid City: discharge of fireworks allowed when grassland fire index allows. Click here for map.
  • Box Elder permits discharge of fireworks within city limits from July 1-4, 2024, between 9:00am and 11:00pm. If the grassland fire danger rating exceeds the “High” level, private or citizen use of fireworks is prohibited.
  • No discharge of fireworks inside Rapid City and a one-mile radius from city limits.
  • No discharge of fireworks within Hill City
  • No discharge of fireworks within Keystone
  • No discharge of fireworks within Wall
  • No discharge of fireworks within Custer
  • No discharge of fireworks within Keystone
