DIY Volunteer Projects

The Helpline Center Volunteer Connections program has created a variety of Do-It-Yourself Volunteer Projects designed to be simple, meaningful and accessible for individuals of all ages. These projects are perfect to complete from the comfort of your own home or as part of a small group, making it easy to give back while fitting volunteerism into your schedule. Whether you are looking for a family activity, a service project for a club or a way to make a difference on your own, these hands-on opportunities provide a flexible and rewarding way to help others.

The Helpline Center encourages individuals, families and groups to browse the list of project ideas in the link below and select those that best match their interests, skills and available materials. Each project has been thoughtfully developed to support local needs and benefit nonprofit organizations and community members throughout South Dakota. After completing your chosen project, finished items can be conveniently dropped off or mailed directly to participating agencies across the state, ensuring your efforts make a direct and positive impact in your community.

Annual Donation Drive

Each year, the Helpline Center hosts a donation drive to support individuals and families across the state. This initiative brings people together to make a tangible impact, one donation at a time.

Every year features a unique focus, allowing us to respond to the most pressing needs in our community. From food and personal care items to other essential goods, the drive is designed to strengthen local resources and ensure individuals and families have access to the support they need.

Donations collected through this effort benefit local partners that serve those experiencing hardship. These items help fill critical gaps and provide relief to neighbors navigating challenging circumstances.

Why It Matters

Basic needs insecurity affects people of all ages, from children in our schools to adults balancing work, bills and caregiving responsibilities. By coming together through the annual donation drive, we can help reduce stress, increase stability and ensure more people in our community feel supported and cared for.

Days of Service

Every year, Volunteer Connections organizes impactful events that unite community members, nonprofits and business groups in the spirit of giving back. In 2025, we were proud to host two statewide Days of Service. Inspiring opportunities for volunteers of all ages to connect with causes that matter and make a tangible difference in their communities. Below are the projects planned for 2026 but watch for more details to come soon!

September 11: Day of Service with Habitat for Humanity

In partnership with Habitat for Humanity, this special day honors the National Day of Service and Remembrance by mobilizing volunteers across South Dakota. Participants will take part in meaningful, hands-on projects that uplift neighborhoods, support families and build stronger communities.

November 22: Family Volunteer Day

Celebrate the power of families giving back together! Our Statewide Family Volunteer Day encourages multigenerational service and invites families of all shapes and sizes to engage in projects that make a lasting impact, just in time for the season of giving.
